Original Japanese posters for science fiction made in Japan, from kaiju (怪獣, "strange beast") spectacle to giant robots and animation. Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya built the postwar monster film at Toho, from Godzilla to Mothra. Tsuburaya Productions carried the same special-effects craft to television heroes like Ultraman, promoted through tokusatsu (特撮, "special effects") theatrical features. The mecha line runs from Yoshiyuki Tomino's giant robots to Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion, with Katsuhiro Otomo and the Yamato series extending it into hand-drawn animation.
